THE MIID REKA AWARDS 2020 CELEBRATED A FANTASTIC COLLECTION OF DESIGNS THAT CAME THROUGH EVEN AMID SUCH A CHALLENGING YEAR.
A celebration of designers and their efforts and a pursuit of excellence, MIID REKA Awards is a respected platform and accolade that is separated into two categories – Design Excellence and Industry Excellence.
MIID, of course, is the Malaysia Institute of Interior Designers – the reputable national institute representing the interior design profession of Malaysia. MIID is a space where key industry leaders are able to gather and showcase their work, which in turn empowers the entire design community in Malaysia, further nurturing the rising talents of the future.
The REKA Awards is a succinct way to epitomize MIID’s purpose and ethos. Despite 2020 being a challenging year for many industries including the interior design industry, the MIID REKA Awards persisted and was able to honour a plethora of brilliant designs.
For MIID REKA Awards for Design Excellence 2020 was conferred to MIID and Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia registered members practicing interior design for works completed between 2018 to the June 30, 2020 that best exemplified the pursuit of excellence in interior design. Empowering the future generation, awards were also conferred to students whose works reflect good design, problem-solving capabilities and soundness in construction.
On the front of Industry Excellence, the recipients are interior builders, product manufacturers and suppliers, as well as research and development providers who have made significant contributions to the interior design industry in Malaysia through their completed works, products or innovative research. The panel of judges included MIID President IDr Mohamad Faisal Ghazali, Taiwanese firm JC Architecture’s Johnny Chiu, and Malaysian Artist Jalaini Abu Hassan.

Some of the most notable designs starred in MIID REKA Awards 2020 include the Haidilao Hot Pot at 1Utama Shopping Mall with its beautiful and classy red tones, the simple and meticulously designed Perry Headquarter & Academy located in Chengdu, China, and the famed EQ Kuala Lumpur with the culturally informed and elegant designs.

One of the most outstanding submissions and awardees is definitely the House 68 project by IDr Wong Pei San of Essential Design Integrated Sdn Bhd. This residential design was also the special award recipient of the Aoyama Design Forum. The interior spaces of House 68 is best described as an “exquisite blend of the geometric and organic, polished and raw.” Modern and welcoming, this Selangor home that designed as a series of modern pavilions is a gorgeous space. Many more exquisitely designed spaces were also highlighted and recognised by this award, making for a thorough collection that is sure to inspire you.

Another innovation is the sBox, a hose box that tidies up the clutter underneath the sink. It stores the hose of the pull-out spray in a flat box specifically designed to fit standard cabinets. The hose can be pulled out and retracted smoothly. It is also protected from getting damaged from being bumped into drawers or waste bins. The sBox offers greater freedom of movement as the length of the new hose integrated into the Hansgrohe sBox increases the operating range around the sink by 26 centimetres.
